monte-cristo-incorrect-quotes:

so Raoul de Bragelonne has been left alone for two (2) days and so far he has:

  • saved a young man who was drowning
  • immediately hugged/kissed said young man (literally)
  • declared him his eternal friendship and love (literally)
  • shared a room with him (literally)
  • (Dumas gave no explanation as to this particular event except that “ah young people are like that, you know how they are)
  • (the English version thought this was Too Gay so they deleted the passage)

i’m not saying he’s not straight, but i’m saying he’s almost gayer than his father.

athenenoctua9:

The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas (1844)

image

Alexandre Dumas’s most famous tale— and possibly the most famous historical novel of all time— in a handsome hardcover volume.

This swashbuckling epic of chivalry, honor, and derring-do, set in France during the 1620s, is richly populated with romantic heroes, unattainable heroines, kings, queens, cavaliers, and criminals in a whirl of adventure, espionage, conspiracy, murder, vengeance, love, scandal, and suspense. Dumas transforms minor historical figures into larger- than-life characters: the Comte d’Artagnan, an impetuous young man in pursuit of glory; the beguilingly evil seductress “Milady”; the powerful and devious Cardinal Richelieu; the weak King Louis XIII and his unhappy queen—and, of course, the three musketeers themselves, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, whose motto “all for one, one for all” has come to epitomize devoted friendship. With a plot that delivers stolen diamonds, masked balls, purloined letters, and, of course, great bouts of swordplay, The Three Musketeers is eternally entertaining.

It’s my favorite book ever and I’m still looking for a decent movie/series. There are more than 40 adaptations, I don’t know them all but the 2011 movie (the steampunk universe) must be the worst (I’ve seen it).

The scriptwriters and me:

image

Yes, he is a man whom I love and admire. I love him because he is good, great and loyal; I admire him because he represents in my eyes the culminating point of human power, but, whilst loving and admiring him, I fear him, and am on my guard against him.

- Aramis talking about D'Artagnan, The Vicomte de Bragelonne (Pg 552)

Look at these clouds which flit across the heavens; at these swallows which cut the air. D'Artagnan moves more quickly than the clouds or the birds; D'Artagnan is the wind which carries them. I tell you, he is superhuman, Monsieur.

- Aramis, The Vicomte de Bragelonne (Pg 522)

tumblinginpublic:

D’Artagnan First Book: I wanna be a musketeer! I’ll serve the King, and meet Ladies, and get into Duels, and it’ll be fun!!!

D’Artagnan Book Three: I have wasted my life. The King is a waste, the Cardinal is a miser. No one loves me, I hate this, I’m quitting.

monte-cristo-incorrect-quotes:

D'Artagnan: *does anything*

Athos:

image

‘But what are you fighting about, Athos?’
‘By heaven, I don’t quite know, he hurt my shoulder. And you, Porthos?’
'By heaven, I’m fighting because I’m fighting,’ Porthos replied, blushing.
Athos, who missed nothing, saw a slight smile pass over the Gascon’s lips.
'We had a discussion about clothes,’ said the young man.
'And you, Aramis?’ asked Athos.
'Me? I’m fighting for reasons of theology,’ replied Aramis, making a sign to d'Artagnan that he begged him to keep the cause of his duel secret.
Athos saw a second smile pass over d'Artagnan’s lips.
'Indeed,’ said Athos.
'Yes, a point in St. Augustine on which we disagree,’ said the Gascon.

-

Alexandre Dumas, The Three Musketeers

… or in which we learn that d’Artagnan can’t keep his mouth shut, Porthos is a fashion victim, Aramis has a sense of humour (and so does d’Artagnan), and Athos doesn’t miss a thing

I can’t believe this is actual canon dialogue.
